Varietal Characteristics
The Renetta apple is the fleshy fruit par excellence, belonging to the Rosaceae family and the species ‘Malus domestica’. Almost certainly of French origin, it is believed to come from the Loire Valley. Today, it is mainly grown in Mediterranean countries, while maintaining its reputation for quality and popularity in its homeland. Its name derives from the French *reine*, meaning “queen”, translated into Italian as Renetta. The apple tree is a deciduous tree that can reach a height of 5-12 metres. It has a wide, dense crown and shallow roots. The leaves are oval in shape, 5 to 12 cm long, with a smooth upper surface and a slightly hairy underside. The flowers, which bloom in spring, are white with pink hues, grouped in small clusters, and have a delicate fragrance. Pollination occurs thanks to insects.
The fruit of the apple tree, i.e. the apple, is round in shape and can vary in colour from green-yellow to red, depending on the variety. In the centre is the core, which contains the seeds and is the hardest part of the fruit. Ripening occurs between summer and autumn.
