Varietal Characteristics
The Dolcetto grape variety is one of Piedmont’s wine jewels, known for its deep-rooted history and distinctive varietal characteristics.
The origins of Dolcetto date back to the Middle Ages, with the earliest written records placing it as early as the 17th century in the Langhe and Monferrato areas. The name “Dolcetto” comes from the dialect term “dosset,” meaning hill, and not, as is often thought, from the sweetness of the wine, since Dolcetto is generally a dry wine. Dolcetto grapes are distinguished by their compact, medium-sized clusters with deep blue-black berries. The skin of the berries is thick and rich in anthocyanins, giving the wine its characteristic deep ruby red color.
