Acacia honey: beauty of nature
The sun shines on the beautiful acacia flowers in our land between Langhe and Roero. The farm Prunotto Mariangela is in the heart of this area and has always produced its own fruit, vegetables and honey.
In the last days we were super busy because we went on the field studying the points of best collection for the honey bees.
We have to be ready in order to place the hives ready for the start of the harvest.
We have already spoken of nomadism and how we produce honey.
In addtion it’s important to remember that usually the movement of hives is done late in the evening.
In this way you can close all the honey bees inside the hive.
Let’s go in deep, talking about the process.
In the evening, whenever it’s dark all the bees return to their hive.
Due to this, when the temperatures drop, they move inside leaving empty the wood frame in front of the hive.
This is the optimal time to move them. We close the hive entrance with a wooden frame and we lift them by hand .
We’ll drive them into another place of harvest.
Because of the diameter of the harvest place they can cover is 3 km, we’ll move them at least that distance.
About nomadism..
The movements of the bees, usually is done according to the altitude.
For example in the areas of the Alessandria or in the Pianura Padana, the blooming is earlier respecting our zones.
In addiction the mountains’ zones have a late harvest.
So we are going to move our hives at different altitudes in order to extend as much as possible the harvest period of this unique honey.
Our hopes are on the climatic conditions: for an optimal collection there has to be a slightly humid climate, sunny without wind and rain.
This is very important since bad conditions can dramatically ruin the crop.
The presence of springs unstable in the past years, very rainy with frequent and an incredible fluctuation of the temperatures is the cause of the latest poor acacia harvests.
Tasting suggestions..
